For the longest time, I secretly yearned for a compact device that could seamlessly complement my travels—something that wouldn't interrupt the music blaring from my car's audio system each time I wanted to capture a brief video of the picturesque landscapes along the way. Deep down, there's an aspiring vlogger in all of us, and while mine remains somewhat elusive, it's always on the lookout for the right opportunity. A device like the GoPro seemed to be the perfect travel companion.
I had never laid my hands on a GoPro before, nor had I ever ventured into extreme adventure sports. Recently, the GoPro team organized a short expedition to the temple town of Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, India. Little did I know about the adventure that awaited me in this remote city, known for its pristine azure waters and religious landmarks that narrate tales of a lost civilization. My journey to the southernmost tip of India was a somewhat arduous one, involving multiple flights and taxi rides. However, the sense of anticipation and the joy of unwrapping the latest offering from GoPro—the Hero 12 Black—eased my momentary discomforts.
My Encounter with the GoPro Hero 12 Black
From the moment I unboxed the device to begin capturing, sharing, and editing, it was evident that the company had poured a great deal of thought into creating its latest GoPro iteration. While I had a basic understanding of its functions beforehand, I was in for a pleasant surprise when the team handed me the review unit.
The Hero 12 Black, as they claim, is 'GoPro-tough,' designed to thrive in the most challenging conditions. It felt both lightweight and robust, making it perhaps the most portable camera I've ever tried. Its boxy design, accented with subtle hints of blue on the casing, added to the camera's overall durability. GoPro has already carved a niche for itself in crafting some of the most rugged cameras, and the Hero 12 Black is no exception. It felt secure in my hands, and as a cautious gadget user, I handled it with care, reassured after witnessing one of the instructors demonstrate the device's sturdiness.
When it comes to the Hero 12 Black, GoPro has ensured that it's not just an incremental upgrade but a significant leap in terms of delivering crisp visuals and enhanced capabilities. The device comes with an array of accessories and mods to cater to a user's shooting preferences. I had the privilege of using both the three-way 2.0 (tripod, grip, and arm) and the handler, or the floating grip. Throughout my adventure, which included road trips and cruising over seawaters, the floating grip proved to be invaluable. The lanyard loop on the floating grip offered enhanced maneuverability when clambering onto the catamaran and disembarking with ease.
Tailor-Made for Adventure
Our journey also included sailing across the glistening waters of the Palk Bay. To showcase the Hero 12 Black's capabilities, our hosts organized a snorkeling expedition. While I struggled in my attempts to snorkel like a seasoned diver, the Hero 12 Black emerged as the ideal companion for our fellow adventurers. Whether it was capturing videos in 5.3K HDR resolution, slow-motion sequences, or breathtaking time lapses, the Hero 12 Black truly felt like a game-changer.
